Week 2 of Pregnancy
You still aren’t technically pregnant in week 2, but your body is already preparing for it. Remember, doctors count your pregnancy from your last menstrual cycle, so if you receive a positive pregnancy test you are actually farther along.
During week 2, one ovum (egg) has become dominant. This egg will mature and the ovary will release it from your fallopian tubes, causing ovulation.
Now would be a great time to share intimacy with your partner if you are trying to conceive. You can use a period tracking app to help pinpoint your ovulation date, but just know these two points:
-
Once released, the egg will live for another 12 to 24 hours
-
Sperm lives up to five days in fertile cervical maucus
Basically, you don’t need to have sexual intercourse on the exact day of ovulation, but you can time it for optimal results. You will probably conceive at the end of the week!
Of the millions of spermatozoa released by your partner, one spermatozoon will win the race and enter the ovum, resulting in fertilization. Right after this, the chromosomes in each cell will combine to create your baby’s genes.
When one sperm fertilizes one egg and divides into two organisms, this results in identical twins. If two spermatozoa fertilize two different eggs, you will expect fraternal twins, which can be of the same or different sex.
If one egg divides into more than two organisms or if multiple spermatozoa fertilize different eggs, this will result in triplets or more!
